Issue: cannot get original Mac OS X startup disk nor original 10.6.3 Snow Leopard Install disk to run and thus cannot get to Disk Utilities to format drive. So I replaced it with Toshiba 1TB 5200rpm SATA drive. Took mini to store and they said it was faulty HDD (tech could not run diagnostics on drive). The drives would be recognized on 'Option' boot up but clicking on either MacHD or Recovery Partition (mini was running on Maverick before failure) led to nothing but grey screen and spinning wheel. My late 2009 mac mini had suddenly stopped booting past the welcome grey screen. I am having the same issue that Roblee is having.

I learned that anyone can upgrade their old mini so if you have one sitting around that you're using as a media server you might want to consider upgrading it before purchasing one of the new minis.Hi. For less than $400 USD it's like having a new mini and I realize now that I should have done this upgrade years ago (or at least considered doing the upgrade as it would have been a lot more than $400). If I wasn't using the Mac mini as a media server (iTunes Home Sharing for music, Air Video HD Server for video streaming) I could totally see using this as an every day machine.

While there was a cost for Backblaze to ship a drive to me ($189 USD), when I ship the drive back using the cheapest option available via USPS, I'll receive a complete refund (minus the return shipping cost).Īll-in-all this was much easier and faster to do than I expected and the results are like night and day. I had the drive connected to the now upgraded mini at noon on Friday and by 7:00 PM I was confident that I had successfully copied the 700+ GB of music, movies, and files over to the SSD.

The drive arrived in less than 5 business days. So, I opted to try Restore By Mail where Backblaze shipped me a single hard drive with all of my files on it. I tried to pull down files from my backup but it was clear after awhile that this was not going to be sustainable this was too slow and the zip files were usually corrupted. I don't use local backups - only cloud backup. Lastly, I ran a couple of software updates and before I knew it I was logged in. Then I installed Mac OS Lion onto the SSD which took about an hour. I used Disk Utility to first format the SSD (OS X Journaled) which took less than a minute. After I installed the hard drive and RAM I put the computer back together and then booted from the flash drive. The latest version of Mac OS that the mini server can run is Lion (10.7) so ahead of this project I used a spare 8 GB USB A flash drive to create an install disk of Lion. I had absolutely no problem with removing the 2 hard drives and popping in the SSD drive. The old RAM popped right out and the new RAM fit in without any issues. I only needed a sturdy, flat tool to "crack" open the computer housing (I used a pocket knife) and a small Phillips screwdriver. To replace the hard drive (and RAM) I followed this very helpful tutorial on YouTube. For the RAM, after purchasing and installing the incorrect type of RAM, I quickly landed on the perfectly compatible RAM from OWC. And while Apple never officially supported more than 4 GB of RAM, I did learn that it is possible to replace the 2 GB sticks with 4 GB sticks for a total of 8 GB of RAM.įor the SSD hard drive I selected the Crucial MX500 2TB. For the upgrade I swapped out the 2 500 GB spinning hard drives (1 TB total) with a single 2 TB SSD.

The Mac mini server has a dual 500 GB Serial ATA hard drives and 4 GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM. After configuring a reasonable computer I ultimately decided to scrap getting a new computer and instead upgrade my existing Late-2009 Mac mini "Core 2 Duo" Server.

I had been waiting for years for Apple to update the Mac mini so I was beyond delighted when the new minis were announced a couple of weeks ago.
